"T" FOR AMERICAN ENGLISH
The American T is influenced very strongly by intonation and its position in a word or
phrase.
- When [t] is the first letter of a word it is pronounced like [ tse ]
Eg : Tea, tie, Teacher , ten , trip, training , table.
- When t,tt,ttl, r t, is in the middle of two vowels it is pronounced like a soft D sound ( d+r).
Eg: I am not afraid of making mistakes, Native, negative, positive, better, matter, letter, bitter, little, party, martin, thirty ...
- When [t] is the first letter of the second syllable is silent:
Eg: Martin, lutter, king, printer, Alary, cliton.
I am eating, eaten, eat
- When [t] comes after n it is silent and also when it is at the end of a word.
Eg: silent, about, what about you? Internet, international, president, first.
